Spire Array

This structure was designed and built under the direction of Professor Dale Clifford’s Design Build course (ARCH 479). It represents an exploration of minimalist construction and innovative techniques. Its geometric layout was inspired by traditional wooden boat-building methods, where curves were generated using physical modeling to establish its striking triangular forms. While one side was intended to evoke the curve of a ship’s hull, the result diverged from its intended shape, adding a layer of unpredictability to its final appearance.

Built over a single day, the structure’s assembly involved prefabricating components off-site, which were then transported and rapidly erected in the canyon. This efficient construction method underscores the project’s emphasis on resourcefulness, showcasing how simple materials can create an elegant and dynamic design. The structure’s openness allows natural light to filter through its wooden framework, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow that evolves with the time of day.

The Spire Array reflects the playful ingenuity of its creators and the hands-on spirit of Design Build at Cal Poly. Though lacking an official name, its rumored that the Professor doesn't take a liking to its unofficial one!
