Observation Deck

The deck stands as a testament to the creativity and persistence of its builders. Originally meant to serve as a rest stop for hikers and bikers, the project began as a proposal in 2017, led by construction management student. What started as a solo venture soon evolved into a collaborative effort with architectural engineering students as well, who brought technical precision to the design.

Perched atop a scenic hill, the deck’s 12-by-12-foot footprint is framed in redwood lumber, chosen for its durability and natural aesthetic. Its light-framed shade structure offers reprieve from the sun while providing unobstructed views of the canyon and its iconic experimental structures. The foundation, reinforced with cast-in-place concrete pier footings and Simpson Strong Tie connections, ensures stability on the uneven hillside.

The project wasn’t without its challenges. Livestock safety concerns required the team to refine their design, softening edges and reinforcing openings to avoid animal entrapment. Environmental reviews added stormwater management and erosion prevention measures, while tight funding demanded creative outreach efforts to secure grants and donations. These obstacles, however, only underscored the students’ resourcefulness and commitment to bringing their vision to life.

Beyond its practical purpose, the Observation Deck symbolizes a renewed energy in Poly Canyon—a reminder that innovation thrives through collaboration and perseverance. Whether enjoyed as a resting place or as a simple architectural feature, the deck invites visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate what the canyon can be.
