Centering for Center

Born from an interdisciplinary studio course, the dome began as an exploration of balance—between art and engineering, simplicity and complexity, permanence and mobility. Crafted from sustainably sourced timber, it prioritizes lightness, both visually and physically, allowing for transport and reassembly without compromising its integrity. Its intricate latticework not only provides structural strength but also creates dappled light patterns reminiscent of a forest canopy, enhancing its role as a space for reflection.

Initially showcased at Descanso Gardens during a Tonalism music and art event, the dome was conceived as a meditative installation, offering a retreat from the noise of daily life. After its relocation to Poly Canyon, it was reimagined and expanded in 2024 with the addition of the Biophilic Instrument Pavilion (BIP)—an interactive enhancement featuring prisms, light-responsive materials, and sound-reactive sensors. These instruments invite visitors to engage with the dome in dynamic ways, transforming it from a static shelter into a vibrant, living experience.

The Centering for Center Dome stands as a testament to the ingenuity and spirit of its creators. Its transportable, modular nature reflects the ideals of sustainable design, while its playful yet contemplative purpose resonates with the canyon’s experimental ethos. It’s not just a structure—it’s an experience that invites visitors to pause, reflect, and connect.
